A Short Straw Bride

Short Straw Bride by Karen Witemeyer is a fantastic read. The story opens in 1870 Texas, when a young girl must tresspass on the County recluse's land. The Archers, four boys that hide behind a large reputation, and escort Merideth to safety when she gets into trouble on their land.
Twelve years later Merideth Hayes is being courted by Roy Mitchell, a man who doesn't want Merideth as much as he wants her land; and he will do anything to get his hands on it. Meri's land isn't the only property Roy Mitchell is coveting. Roy also wants the Archer's land, and will use whatever means necessary to convince the brothers to sell to him.
When Merideth overhears one of Roy's despicable plans, she knows she has to go onto Archer land to warn the brothers. When she finally finds the brothers on their land; it is with four rifles pointed at her chest.
Travis Archer is the oldest of the Archer boys, and having a female tresspasser is not normal. When Merideth convinces Travis that is coming he holds her on his land. When Merideth tries to offer assistance, an accident leaves her with a serious head injury and a shattered reputation. There is only one solution, she marries Travis Archer; the one who drew the short straw.
